Welcome to Component #3 of ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept’: Action
Lights! Camera! Action! I couldn’t wait to get to this component to be able to use this line.
The Definition of Action: 1. The state or process of acting or doing: 2. Something that is done or accomplished; a deed. 3. Organized activity to accomplish an objective: a problem requiring drastic action. 4. The causation of change by the exertion of power or a natural process: the action of waves on a beach; the action of a drug on blood pressure. 5. Habitual or vigorous activity; energy: a woman of action.
A recent article I saw on the internet:
The Headline: “The One and Only Secret for Achieving Massive Success”
The Body: “The one and only secret to success is taking persistent, massive action. Every high achiever knows this truth. The reason why so many neglect this very important aspect is because actual work has to be done”
This post is typical of thousands of articles on the internet. They all assert that either “Action” is the “key” to success, or that there’s one particular “something else” that’s the one and only, secret ingredient of success.
This is absolutely irresponsible, injurious, dangerous and amateurish.
The so called pundits, the experts who are supposedly going to give you the proverbial “secret sauce”, talk about taking “massive action.” Advising you to take “Massive action” without giving you a sharp, explicit explanation of what it really means and what it really “looks like” should be considered an act of reckless endangerment.
The meaning of “Massive”: 1. (of objects) large in mass; bulky, heavy, and usually solid 2. impressive or imposing in quality, degree, or scope: massive grief. 3. relatively intensive or large; considerable: a massive dose.
With over 40 years of being in my own business I have never experienced or observed anything amounting to what the experts describe, or I should say “what they don’t describe, “as “massive action.” I was in the fashion business and we, at one point in time, designed, produced and shipped an average of 160,000 garments per week and I never witnessed “massive action.”
When a person declares that “massive action” is the way to succeed it will only bring intimidation and frustration to your world. You might think that if you’re not out 24/7 doing something, anything, you’re not going to be successful. This is absolutely, positively, unequivocally not true.
Massive action or not, I’m asking you to reject anyone or anything that states that there is one secret to success.
First of all, there is no secret to success. It’s openly available and in full view of everyone. It’s not something locked in a vault and you don’t need a secret handshake and password to have access to it.
Enough? I agree.
FOR YOUR INFORMATION: One more thing . . . The reason I’m harping on this suggestion of “Massive Action” is that I don’t want you to take this misinformation to the starting gate. It could produce harmful and damaging consequences to you and your situation.
Knowing this we can now move onward and upward.
Onward and Upward:
Effecting a successful realization in shifting your life to the other side of ordinary and in to the world of extraordinary is a process. Your Success Quest is exactly that. A process.
“Action,” is that one dominant step that needs to be taken, after everything is “packed, planned and ready to go,” to enable the launch and existence of your Success Quest to become viable.
There is a total of three “Action Stations” on your Success Quest and beyond.
The first one is on the road to the Success Quest “Starting Gate”, the second one is beyond and on the road to the Success Quest “Finish Line” where glorious victory awaits you, and the third one is beyond the “Finish Line” and on the road to maintaining a sustainable victory and a life that you’ve planned for.
These three “Action Stations” need to be equipped with the proper Success Support Tools and be professionally managed with determination and extreme vigilance.
Special-Note: In order to responsibly develop these prerequisites on all three “Action Stations” there is much to learn. Knowing all about “Action” is imperative but there are 8 other essential components that make up the indestructible foundation of your Success Support Arsenal. You’ll find them all here on www.itsallpossible.com in ‘The t.r.i.p Concept’ and ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept.’ These 9 components will act as your indestructible Success Support foundation and allow you to experience a professionally mobilized and sustainable Success Quest.
Our focus in this component is on the power and energy of “Action: What is it; When to use it; How to use it.
There’s many steps to take before you step out and initiate the “Action” launch step. You have a purpose, a goal and a dream that you made plans for. You’re positive, determined and ready to “shift” your life. You find yourself at the “Starting Gate”, the entrance leading to your Success Quest.
Now what? You stop and hold up. That’s what.
Most people just barrel on through without giving any respect and consideration to their actions and the ramifications of these actions. This is just plain ol’ irresponsible, amateurish and a very bad business practice. It could undermine and derail all your plans.
You’ll never be able to prepare for 100% of what lies ahead but you certainly could, and should, make a calculated effort, to try to mitigate and “prognosticate” any and all future adverse or challenging “happenings” possible. Understanding the concept of the “Action” that you’ll exert is one very worthwhile preparation option. Knowing what kind of action to draw upon is essential and invaluable to a successful outcome for your Success Quest.
In addition, knowing your options regarding the type of action, you could and should embrace, is a huge power advantage and that knowledge will set you on an appropriate course to victory.
To be able to reliably discern, determine and maintain your course of action, there are several concepts and ideas you must be aware of, and have 24/7 access to, before you launch your Success Quest:
1- Your “Triad” Must Be in Place: To sustain the fortitude needed for overt and persistent action, your “Triad” must be in place and available to you, for an interminably period of time. Your “Triad,” made up of Self-Inspiration Self-Determination and Self-Motivation (or The ‘three-your-self’ Concept), is the kindred force that will encourage you and give you the strength and fortitude, to be ready and able, to hit the ground running when the Action Step kicks off.
Please see ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept’ Part 2 motivation for more information on this illustrious threesome.
2-Pull Out onto the “Road” and Proceed Slowly: It’s impossible to know every last detail of your Success Quest route and how you’re going to arrive at the “finish line.” Knowing the “general” direction that you need to travel in to reach the “finish line” on your Success Quest is sufficient for now.
The important point is that you just start and become mobile. You could sharpen your navigation skills as you move forward and slowly conquer the “terrain” in front of you day by day. Moving slowly, deliberately and cautiously will enable you to correct and adjust your direction quickly and effectively when you have to.
3-Stay Roused Up: Does your “purpose” and “goals” still get you energized, excited and invigorated enough to stay mobile and upright, and do they still empower you enough, to effectively work through any and all obstacles or setbacks, that may come your way?
If you’re just starting out you really don’t know how you’ll react yet. In any case you should develop a “Determination Statement”, e.g. “I will never ever give up,” or a more comprehensive one and write it down. Use whatever inspires and motivates you. Below this “Determination Statement” add your purpose, goals and dreams. Keep this “Determination Statement” with you at all times so you could assess and adjust your state of mind as you go along.
4-Become Familiar with the “Terrain” Ahead:
a-What do you know to be true about the “territory” that you’ll have to travel through to achieve victory on your Success Quest? Have you done the research? Where could you get hurt? What obstacles are obvious? What have you heard about your “route”? Who or what, could help you mitigate the challenges that you’ll face on your Success Quest? Have you spoken to enough people to get an idea of what it takes to accomplish what you want to do?
b- Have you really put enough effort and work in to getting to the point of “knowing what you don’t know?”
Questions and Shredding” will get you to the reality you need to see and understand.
SideBar: The key to getting answers and clarification for any and all of the situations you’ll face: Please see my article on “Asking the Right Questions” and “Questions and Shredding” here on www.itsallpossible.com entitled, “The Most Powerful Tool in Your Success Support Arsenal is Free and Available 24/7. Are You Using it?”
“Asking the Right Questions” and “Shredding” go hand in hand. This dynamic duo is another compelling investigation, detection, educational and fact-finding tool in your Success Support Arsenal.
5- What Type of Action Do You Need to Put Forth:
Types of Action:
Most people think of “physically doing something” when they hear the word “action.” In my opinion “action” is a very diversified word with many subsets all explaining the purpose, intensity and timing of a particular “Action”.
Over the years I’ve labeled the different forms of action subsets that I found to be common and recurring in my personal and business life.
This was exceptionally helpful and productive for me on a daily basis. Being able to compartmentalize the different types of action allowed me to really focus in on what needs to be done or what needs “not” to be done.
The most valuable benefit: The label I gave to each action subset would serve as a beacon for me as to where I have to go and what I have to do to get there. This had a calming effect when my immediate world was at peace or turned upside down.
One of the most profound reminders that resulted from this process: “Whatever actions you take on a particular day will not only affect you, it will affect many more people on that day, the next day and possibly for years to come. There are no mechanisms or resources to determine the impact or influence of your actions on the future.” I dubbed this phenomenon The Ripple-Effect Conundrum.
The Ripple-Effect Conundrum calls for caution, vigilance, empathy, respect and being custodial in any and all of the actions you take. Be aware and Be responsible. How will your action today affect your situation a week from now? A month from now? Slow down and think it through as far into the future as possible.
How to attempt to anticipate what effect your actions could create in the future? Please visit ‘The t.r.i.p Concept’ Part 4 Positivity for help.
Let’s Continue with the “Types of Action”:
1- Nilified-Action: “Nil” Defined- nothing, naught, zero. “Fied” Defined: to Make.
Intensity: Zero to Low Usage: Deliberate, unintentional, involuntary or spontaneous.
Sometimes the best action is no action at all. Inaction Rocks.
When my son was about 10 years old he was at a friend’s house playing. I got a call from the father that there was a “situation” and I should come over immediately. As I walked into the friend’s house I could see him and his five friends sitting at the kitchen table and no one looked happy.
Before I could say anything the father said “there was a fight between my son and his son” and he would like us all to sit down to discuss it.
No way was I putting my son on trial for anyone. If he did something wrong, I’ll deal with him in my own home and in my own way. Before he could finish what he wanted to say my hand went up as if to cut him off and I responded that “I’m not interested in talking and I will take my son home and discuss it with him first. “No action was needed until I got my son’s side of the story. I took control of the situation.
“Nilified- Action” gives you the opportunity to think clearly and look into the future (The Ripple-Effect Conundrum). Inaction could be the most powerful form of action. It takes self-control, self-confidence and courage to not react to a situation immediately and delay your response.
Important: Inertia, or inaction, gives you time to think clearly and let the emotions rise or descend to an appropriate level. If a situation is not life threatening, imminently destructive or obviously dangerous to other people as well as yourself, it’s always better to maintain an “inaction” posture at first. It never hurts to take a time out and get the facts and make a plan. A fight with a significant other is a perfect example of when inertia should be implemented.
2- Ethereal-Action: Ethereal Defined- “Delicate and light or tenuous. synonyms: exquisite, dainty, elegant, graceful; “
Intensity: Low to Light. Usage: Deliberate, unintentional, involuntary or spontaneous.
Ethereal-Action is a low level response that doesn’t need a lot of thought. It calls for a conciliatory posture and may take some social finesse.
Some Examples: “I’ll help you finish that” “Let’s do this together”, “I’ll call them and apologize”
Ethereal Action, being “slow and easy”, is a great way to initially react to all action situations if it’s possible and, as before, if the situation is not life threatening, imminently destructive or obviously dangerous to other people as well as yourself.
Initiating Ethereal Action at the beginning of any situation puts you in control and gives you the power to get the facts and to be able to ascertain the appropriate next move. It relieves the stress and tension that may exist and it brings people into a comfortable zone where no one feels threatened or feels like they’re being singled out or picked on.
You can always escalate the intensity of your action but it’s very difficult, not impossible, but difficult to start at an extreme level and dial it back, with everyone’s feelings and ego remaining intact.
3- Deliberate-Action: Deliberate Defined- thoughtful, carefully weighed and considered; intentional.
Intensity: Moderate to Extreme. Usage: Deliberate only
“Deliberate-Action” enables you to have one last chance to think through “Is this the right thing to do?” It allows you to pause before you take an action, verbalize what you intend to do, take a deep breath and then initiate the action.
This is action is established and implemented intentionally and strategically. It’s usually an action that calls for careful scrutiny and goes hand in hand with comprehensive research and thoughtful, productive conversations with everyone that could be affected by the outcome. Deliberate-Action is appropriate for, and normally used in, significant and/or major events or situations.
Some Examples: Hiring/firing an employee, moving your office to new facilities, planning a vacation; buying a car; buying a home; getting married; getting divorced; breaking up a business partnership.
“Deliberate Action” calls for the organized accumulation of information before a credible action could, or should, be taken or even considered. The intensity of this action all depends on the particular situation.
Deliberate-Action could move the needle anywhere from easy peasy action to ruthless, heartless bastard- type action.
The Take-Away:
a– “Deliberate-Action” is “thoughtful, carefully weighed, considered and intentional “Action.” Its consciously, purposely and purposefully made to fit the situation at hand. It’s not an “off-the-cuff” action. It’s a pre-planned, pro-active, hands-on process to structure the “Action” that you’ll initiate.
b- “Deliberate-Action” could be used for any situation, but it’s exceptionally helpful and appropriate for extreme events or extraordinary situations where there’s potentially going to be significant consequential change, possibly accompanied by a powerfully energized “Ripple-Effect.”
c- “Deliberate-Action” could also present itself in the form of manipulative, self-serving or devious moves. Deliberate-Action could be used by the bad guys, as well as the good guys, to obtain what they want by using any device or notion necessary to get it.
4- Deflective-Action: to cause (something that is moving) to change direction; to keep (something, such as a question) from affecting or being directed at a person or thing; cause (something) to change direction by interposing something; turn aside from a straight course. Synonyms: turn aside/away, divert, avert, sidetrack; distract, draw away.
Intensity: low to Extreme. Usage: Deliberate, unintentional, involuntary or spontaneous.
This is a dynamic action. This action at times could take on a subversive, morally indefensible course of physical and/or verbal movement or an above board strategic, yet clandestine action. It also could take on a movement that is made up of both.
This action is about saying one thing but intentionally doing another thing, functioning as a Trojan Horse or being downright ornery.
Deceit, concealment, trickery, stratagem, misleading, omitting information and manipulation are a few of the characteristics found in the Deflective-Action.
The world is a tough place where a lot of bad people prowl the streets and the boardrooms. Deflective-Action is also about protection, preservation, sanctuary, and about creating a protective shield to wrap around you, the people you care about and it’s particularly beneficial in the business world.
The motto on the “door” that leads to Deflective-Action is “You Do What You Gotta Do”
Some examples: You pretend to like someone in work that is a horrible person to get them to help you, you don’t want your child to play with the nasty kid next door so you make up stories to avoid them or divert the conversation in a different direction, you become friendly with the guy with a “nice personality” to get information about his company for the company of the guy your dating.
Deflective-Action is about drama and deliberately playing a part to get what you need. Execution is as important, if not more important, than the words themselves.
Being aware of the Deflective-Action and knowing that it exists will help you possibly detect it before it progresses when directed towards you or it could enable you to work through the times when you’re “Deflected Upon” and trust me, we all get the “Deflection” knocked out of us at “one” time or another.
The key take-away here:
a- Deflective-Action is a strategy to bounce action or responsibility away from oneself and toward another person, time, or place.
b- Deflective-Action in and of itself is not always bad and in the right circumstances it serves as protection, defense and ensures your safety and the safety of everyone in your sphere of influence and beyond. Using it in an altruistic manner today, could effect and produce positive consequences for the future by way of “The Ripple-Effect Conundrum.”
5-Extreme-Action:” Extreme Defined– “reaching a high or the highest degree; very great.
Intensity: Extreme. Usage: Deliberate, involuntary or spontaneous.
This type of action is about immediate physical or verbal movement. It’s about life threatening situations. It’s about personal property preservation situations. It’s about very little or no time for thinking. This action leaves little time for thoughtful planning, if any at all. It’s an action that launches you into a state of extreme preparedness and accelerated mobilization.
Some Examples: The basement is flooding, move what we can; someone is about to get hit by a car and you jump and push them to safety, someone just swallowed a poisonous liquid and you call poison control as you fly to the hospital or you call 911.
The best thing you can do to prepare for these types of actions is to have a general plan for as many scenarios as possible and actually think about them and mentally review them whenever you get the chance.
Of course, I know it’s impossible to predict every situation.
If you use your imagination and play “what’s the worst that could happen” during your peaceful moments, you’ll find that it will build a reserve of “action plans” that could all work together, when and if you need to act fast.
Please see my Posi-Negative concept in The t.r.i.p Concept Part 4 Positivity on this blog. It will be a big help and will explain a lot more.
Too much, too obsessive? Think of why you join AAA, have renters or home owners’ insurance or keep an eye on the kids as much as possible. It’s all about “you never know” and it’s all about protecting and preservation.
6- Emancipatory Action: The “Just Get Started” Powerhouse Action.
Emancipatory Definition- “To free someone (that be “you”) from someone else’s (that be “you too”) control or power.”
Powerful statement. Powerful Reality.
Intensity: Low to Extreme. Usage: Deliberate, unintentional, involuntary or spontaneous.
This action is an exercise in: Self-Inspiration + Self– Determination + Self-Motivation. It’s called to action when mental resolve and vitality is needed to accomplish a goal that’s important to you.
The “Emancipatory Action’ gets you, to and through, the “Starting Gate,” it gets you up and running on the road to the “finish line” of your Personal or Business Success Quest.
Crazy Heh? The act of putting “one foot in front of the other”, over and over again, will set you on the road to success in life and/or business. “Just Starting” doesn’t necessarily mean to exclusively move physically forward to start this action. Mentally preparing and visualizing is the critical jump-start point for your Success Quest.
It’s a simple concept. It’s the old saying “a body in motion tends to stay in motion unless acted upon by an outside force.” The only “outside force” in this case would be you if you decide to retreat and not start for whatever reason or reasons that “you” create.
I’m asking you to think about this. By “Just Starting” you enter the arena that leads men and women to the freedom to achieve their goals and gives them all a fair chance to make all their dreams come true no matter what their weaknesses or disabilities are, real or imagined.
“Just Starting” will set you free. It will set you free from the self-imposed mental and/or physical “chains” that bind you. It will set you free from the “You Too”, that inner voice that whispers “no you can’t” when you absolutely know in every corner of your soul that you unequivocally are able and ready to do so.
Reviewing ‘The t.r.i.p Concept’ and ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept’ here on www.itsallpossible.com will empower and guide you to victory on your Personal or Business Success Quest.
‘The t.r.i.p Concept’ will support you and guide you to the “Starting Gate” and beyond. ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept’ will support you and guide you to the “Finish Line” of your Success Quest.
Important: For additional information on how to use your Triad, also known as The ‘Three-Your-Self’ Concept: Self-Inspiration + Self– Determination + Self-Motivation to enhance and bolster the Emancipatory Action that you press into service, please review ‘The i.m.a.p.p Concept’ Part 2 Motivation here on www.itsallpossible.com .
7- Mitigation-Action: The “relief” Action.
Mitigation Defined- the action of reducing the severity, seriousness, or painfulness of something.
Mitigation-Action is a specific action, project, activity, or process taken to reduce or eliminate long or short-term risk or mental and physical harm, to people, physical property and “intangibles” such as businesses.
Intensity: Low to Extreme. Usage: Deliberate, unintentional, involuntary or spontaneous.
Mitigation-Action is initiated, developed and maintained by individuals with an anticipatory mindset. These individuals are extremely mindful of forces that impact the terrain that makes up their sphere of influence and beyond. They’re skillful and determined in building buffers and barriers for protection and forestalling anything and everything that is discerned and perceived to be a threat of any kind.
The levels of intensity for this action, and the proactive disposition that travels with it, goes from installing a simple alarm system in your home, to installing a state-of-the- Art alarm system with all the bells and whistles and building a panic room to boot.
If your Success Quest is a business one, the Mitigation-Action Concept should be front-of- mind for everyone involved.
To develop and nurture this proactive inclination and make it part of your company’s culture and core values it must first be introduced in a serious way and subsequently maintained, supported and encouraged in a serious way.
One effective way to start to get your message out there to your people is to introduce a Mitigation Action Plan using ‘The Beast Buster’ found in my article “How to Cope, Survive and Thrive On Your Personal or Business Success Quest.
This is a basic course of action I use to solve all provocations, disagreements, hot mess issues, unpredictable situations, challenges, problems and any other adverse situation that arises. I use this process to identify and uncover “obvious, latent, current and future” obstacles, setbacks and, once again, adverse situations.
The basic configuration of this course of action is: identify, verify, classify, modify and Actify
I use this course of action in its entirety, or I adjust and adapt the individual pieces to the situation at hand. The most important aspect of this process is that it serves as another very reliable and compelling tool in your Success Support Arsenal that’s used for investigation, detection, identification, exposition, education and fact-finding.
“The Beast Buster”: 1- Clarify-Identify, 2-verify-classify, 3- modify-Actify was modified and used in this way to help me Cope, Survive and Thrive while on my Business Success Quest.
SideBar: Two very potent informational tools to prepare you for, and to mitigate the effects of, any and all current and future setbacks, obstacles and other adverse circumstances:
a-Here on www.itsallpossible.com please review ‘The t.r.i.p Concept’ Part 4 Positivity for additional ways to be anticipatory and to sharpen your skills as a “prognosticator,” in order to build an alert and proactive team.
b-Please read my article: “How to Cope, Survive and Thrive On Your Personal or Business Success Quest,” also found here on www.itsallpossible.com .
FINAL TAKE-AWAY: These different types of actions are laid out orderly and neatly and waiting for you to review them. It goes without saying, but I will say it anyway, that in real life, they will not be laid out so neatly and daintily for you to have the luxury of taking the time, to familiarize yourself with all of the action options. Now is the time to adopt and adapt to the basic tenets of all of these actions. When all hell breaks loose and you need to decide what to do it’ll be too late.
This list is just meant to bring to mind the different action options you have access to in addition to, the specific actions that may be appropriate for your particular way of life. Careers, professions and even hobbies may have actions that are unique to them.
My list gives you a broad enough view of the different kinds of action options, and all of these, can be modified and morphed into accommodating actions for your needs.
Meld, mold and merge them wherever and whenever you need to. Make them work for you. Be Creative. Be Flexible. Most of all, Be Vigilant.
